Designing a motif from scratch
- Set the size first. Decide the finished size, then work back: a 4-inch hoop on 14-count Aida holds about 56 stitches across, less a margin. The calculator does this sum.
- Block in shapes with Fill and Line, then refine edges with single stitches.
- Shade with two or three neighbouring shades of one colour family (for example DMC 3865, 3072 and 647 for white fur). Search the palette by name to find families.
- Check the stitched preview. It shows how the crosses look on fabric; hard edges that look fine as squares can look jagged as crosses.
- Print — the printout splits big charts into pages of 60 × 80 stitches with numbered edges and a key with skein counts.

Is my design saved?
Yes, in this browser only (localStorage). It is kept until you clear the chart or your browser data. Use “Save design file” to keep a copy or move it to another device.
Can I use it on a phone?
Yes. Tap or drag to stitch. Zoom in with the slider so each square is big enough for your finger; the chart scrolls inside its frame.
What do the bold lines mean?
Every tenth grid line is bold, the same as printed charts, so you can count in tens on the fabric. Numbers along the edges mark every ten stitches.
How do I add a colour that is not in the palette?
Search by DMC number or colour name, or paste a hex colour and the editor adds the nearest DMC floss by CIEDE2000 colour difference.
