Reading DMC names

DMC names describe a colour family and a shade: “Delft Blue - Medium”, “Delft Blue - Dark”. Shades in one family are made to sit together, so they are the safest way to shade an area. Open any colour to see its family and the closest alternatives.

Screen colours versus real floss

Hex values here are approximations collected by the stitching community, not official DMC data. Thread has sheen, so the same skein looks lighter in raking light and darker in shadow. For anything where colour really matters — skin tones, a brand logo — hold the real skeins against each other before you start.

How many DMC floss colours are there?

DMC’s six-strand embroidery floss (Mouliné Spécial 117) comes in about 500 colours including variegated, Light Effects and Etoile threads. This chart lists the 454 solid cotton colours used in most patterns.

Are the colours on this chart accurate?

They are close RGB approximations, but no screen shows thread exactly: floss has sheen and texture, and every monitor is calibrated differently. Check real skeins or a printed DMC shade card before committing to a large project.

What is the difference between DMC Blanc, White and B5200?

Blanc (listed as White here) is DMC’s standard white; B5200 “Snow White” is a brighter, optically whitened white; Ecru is an off-white. They look different side by side, so follow the chart.

How do I find the DMC colour closest to a paint or photo colour?

Paste its hex code or use the colour picker in “Find the nearest floss”. The chart ranks every DMC colour by CIEDE2000 difference; under about 2.5 most people can’t tell them apart.

Why are DMC numbers not in colour order?

Numbers were assigned as colours were added over more than a century, so 150 and 151 are unrelated. Newer colours in the 3xxx range fill gaps in older families. Use the family filter or sort by colour instead.
