Widths in inches; the same figure applies to height. Hoop column: smallest round hoop that shows the whole square design on 14-count. Evenweave over 2 matches Aida at half its count (28 = 14, 32 = 16, 36 = 18).

Reading the chart

Fabric count is the number of stitches per inch. Higher counts make smaller stitches, so the same chart comes out smaller: moving from 14 to 18-count shrinks a design to 78% of its width. If you want a bigger piece without re-charting, go down in count (11-count, or 14-count with three strands).

For fabric, add a margin to every side — 3 inches for framing is the usual advice — and buy the next pre-cut size up. The Aida guide compares counts side by side.

Questions stitchers ask

How big will my cross stitch be?

Divide the stitch count by your fabric’s count. 100 stitches on 14-count Aida is 100 ÷ 14 = 7.1 inches (18.1 cm). On evenweave or linen stitched over two threads, divide by half the count: 28-count over 2 behaves like 14-count.

What size is a 100 × 100 cross stitch?

9.1 in on 11-count, 7.1 in on 14-count, 6.3 in on 16-count and 5.6 in on 18-count — square in each case, before adding fabric margins.

How much fabric do I need around the design?

Add 3 inches (7.5 cm) on every side for framing, so a 7.1-inch design needs a 13.1-inch square of fabric. For cards and small ornaments 1.5–2 inches is enough.

What hoop size fits my design?

The design’s diagonal has to fit inside the hoop with a little room. A 5 × 5 inch design has a 7.1-inch diagonal, so an 8-inch hoop is the smallest that shows all of it.
